Fifteen Weeks of online Conservatory-level Acting Training
tailored specifically to the Audiobook Perfomer.

42 hours of instruction.

The course will meet once weekly for fourteen weeks (with a bonus, optional fifteenth week).
Class time will be on Thursdays, always in the same time slot, using Zoom.
Each class will run between 2-3 hours depending on need.
Every meeting will aim to provide every individual with on-screen performance time/evaluation and positive feedback from their peers.

Intimate Class Sizes

Classes are limited in size to ten participants. This is so that individuals will always have time for in-class work and will always feel engaged rather than the majority of their time in spectatorship. If an actor misses a class, they will be have access to a recording of the previous week to ‘catch up’. Recordings will be available for one week following each class session for review.

A structured syllabus with specific goals.

Working from the template of the college Acting 101 courses he taught for years, Joel has completely retooled the syllabus to create constant focus on the needs of the vocal performer. Narrators may utilize physicality in the booth to help craft a character, and that work will be explored. But the course constantly places emphasis upon truth in voice work - character, 3rd person narration and dialogue. Each week has a guided syllabus, specific topics to explore, goals, assignments which build upon each other. This is not a ‘drop-in’ or ‘troubleshooting’ class, but a complete introduction to performance technique for the audiobook actor.

A private coaching session

‘Acting For Audio’ is not a narration technique class. The focus is upon the work of the actor and how it is applied to audio, but it is not primarily focused on mic technique etc, marketing, acx etc. as traditional one-on-one coaching might be. Every student will have one free 1/2 hour private coaching session that they may use to either address audiobook specific needs, or for a deeper dive/guidance in class work.

Bonus final class

As a bonus final class, once the member of the ensemble are confident working in front of their peers and the class dynamic is established, there will be a bonus, optional 15th class focused on narrating sex scenes and battle scenes and how they connect to what has already been learned from Shakespearean technique. It’s a hoot.
